Oil and watercolour paintings form an important part of the museum’s European collection. Both technically and aesthetically, the works on display are outstanding examples of European artistic achievement. They also reflect the artistic tastes and cultural interests of their respective periods. Although the principal group comprises nineteenth-century British paintings, the gallery also features works from the traditional French School, beautiful Italian landscapes, and picturesque scenes associated with the Munich School of painting. Cooper’s Cattle in Repose, together with four other works in the museum, depicts idyllic English pastoral landscapes populated by lifelike sheep and cattle. (The artist’s name should be verified—possibly Thomas Sidney Cooper.)
The Italian collection includes works by Canaletto, Hayez, Blass, Marc Aldine, Diziani, Matteini, and several lesser-known artists. (Some artist names, particularly “Marc Aldine” and “Blass”, should be verified.) Canaletto’s oil painting Piazza San Marco, exhibited at the Salar Jung Museum, is a remarkable work that combines magnificent architecture, harmonious composition, and masterful perspective. (The original description is overly subjective and repetitive.) Hayez’s Soap Bubbles, depicting a boy blowing bubbles into the air, is a charming composition that continues to delight visitors.
