History of the Salar Jung Museum
The Salar Jung Museum was established in the year 1951 and is located on the southern bank of the River Musi in Hyderabad, Telangana. The Salar Jung family is responsible for the collection of this rare and eclectic ensemble of art objects from India and the world. The Family is one of the most illustrious families in the history of the Deccan, five of them having been Prime-Ministers in the erstwhile Nizam rule of Hyderabad-Deccan. Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, popularly known as the Salar Jung III was appointed Prime Minister by Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam in 1912.

The collections of the Salar Jung Museum are mirrors of the past – with objects ranging from the 2nd century BCE to the 20th century. The Museum houses a collection of over 48,000 art objects, more than 8000 manuscripts, and over 60,000 printed books. The Museum’s collection comprises Indian, Persian, Arabian, Nepalese, Japanese, Chinese, and European art. Additionally, a special gallery called ‘The Founder’s Gallery’, is devoted to the illustrious Salar Jung family and their history. The exhibits on display are spread across 40 galleries on two floors and three blocks. In the upcoming years the galleries will gradually be revitalised to state-of-the-art experiences for the public.

The Salar Jung Museum is a brick and mortar testimony of the Salar Jung family’s generations of art connoisseurship. The Museum building was officially commissioned and open to public by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 16th December, 1951.
