Collecting the World for India: The Salar Jungs and their Collecting Histories

The Museum is organising an exhibition of over 75 objects from its collections to provide a glimpse into the collecting world of the Salar Jungs – Mir Turab Ali Khan, Laiq Ali Khan and Mir Osman Ali Khan. The exposition provides an understanding of how three generations of the Salar Jungs collected, driven through their passion and awareness of the world, some of the most astonishingly curious art objects from around the world to fill their home at Diwan Deori recreating a cabinet of curiosities for Hyderabad. The collections, many also copies of masterpieces, reflect their knowledge, and interest in keeping abreast with collecting trends in the world in the early 19th century and opens a window into the world of one of the earliest private collectors of India.
